The Gili Trawangan Community Care for the Environment Front

The Gili Trawangan Community Care for the Environment Front is committed to creating a sustainable island through responsible waste management and community involvement.

About FMPL Gili Trawangan

The Front Masyarakat Peduli Lingkungan (FMPL) was born from the initiative of local residents to address the growing problem of waste caused by tourism in Gili Trawangan. Since 2009, FMPL has developed into the official manager of an independent and sustainable waste transportation and processing system. Today, FMPL is a pioneer in community-based waste management on this small island.

Before 2000

Waste management in Gili Trawangan is still conventional (burned and buried in open land).

Around 2009

The initiative of H. Malik (Founder), who is still active today, led to the formation of the Environmental Care Group (KMPL), which is concerned with waste management.

2018

Through Regional Regulation No. 3 of 2018 concerning Waste Management, KMPL was transformed into FMPL to legalize the institution as a third party that collects levies.

2022-Present

FMPL is back in action after the earthquake and COVID-19 with various collaborations and developments in waste management.

Our Mission

  • Increasing awareness and participation of the community, business groups, and tourists in waste management.
  • Developing an efficient and environmentally friendly waste sorting, collection, and transportation system.
  • Encouraging collaboration between citizens, businesses, and the government in creating a clean and healthy environment.
  • Supporting recycling efforts and reducing plastic waste in Gili Trawangan.

Main Activities of FMPL

Waste Sorting

FMPL sorts organic, inorganic, and residual waste at the TPST, with a sorting capacity of around 50% per day using a combination of machines and manual labor.

Pengangkutan Sampah

FMPL provides waste transportation services for businesses, public facilities, and residential areas with 3–4 trips per day using 14 three-wheeled vehicles, based on service fee agreements and service zones.

Management and Recycling

Since 2022, FMPL has been producing bricks from broken glass bottles and plastic bags, and will resume composting organic waste in early 2025—as a concrete step toward supporting the local circular economy.

Environmental Education and Campaigns

FMPL regularly holds campaigns, workshops, and beach clean-up activities to raise awareness and concern among the community and tourists about the importance of protecting the environment.
